LSU football concludes its 2025 season on Saturday, facing Houston in the Texas Bowl. It’s LSU’s second-straight Texas Bowl trip after the Tigers beat Dave Aranda’s Baylor squad last year.
It was a weird year in Baton Rouge. The Tigers began the season with national title hopes, but head coach Brian Kelly was fired after LSU’s third loss. LSU tabbed Frank Wilson as the interim head coach and the Tigers set their sights on hiring Ole Miss’s Lane Kiffin.
LSU got Kiffin, poaching a coach from an SEC rival amidst a playoff run. Kiffin brought a slew of his own assistants to Baton Rouge, including running backs coach Kevin Smith. That meant Frank Wilson would not be retained. LSU and Ole Miss ended up making a trade of sorts — with Smith signing in Baton Rouge, Wilson decided to take his talents to Ole Miss.
The move makes sense for the Rebels and Wilson. Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding worked on Wilson’s staff when Wilson was the head coach at UTSA. Ole Miss is the place where Wilson got his start in college coaching, too. Ole Miss wants to recruit Louisiana and few do it better than Wilson.
But Wilson isn’t leaving LSU just yet.
Will Frank Wilson coach LSU’s bowl game despite Ole Miss’s move?
Yes, Frank Wilson will remain LSU’s interim head coach through the conclusion of LSU’s Texas Bowl meeting with Houston. Ole Miss is a rival of LSU and there are concerns the Rebels could poach some of LSU’s players in the transfer portal, but Wilson is a professional who enjoyed his time at LSU after a lengthy two stints in Baton Rouge.
After the game, Wilson will be off to Ole Miss, and the program will be entirely in the hands of Lane Kiffin.
