Notre Dame loses yet another defensive back to the transfer portal

It’s unfortunately the offseason for Notre Dame football, which means much of the chatter will center on the transfer portal as is the case for every other program in the country.

The Fighting Irish have already suffered attrition, and another player decided to leave South Bend when it was announced on Saturday that defensive back Karson Hobbs will enter the portal.

It’s unfair, but Hobbs is probably most known for his dropped interception late in the game against Texas A&M, a loss that dropped the Fighting Irish to 0-2 and helped cost them a spot in the College Football Playoff.

Hobbs had limited playing time in 2025, as Dallas Golden overtook him on the depth chart at nickel behind DeVonta Smith.

Of ND’s eight portal departures so far, five of them are defensive backs. Marcus Freeman’s squad is still slated to return one of the best secondaries in the country with the likes of Leonard Moore, Christian Gray, Adon Shuler and Tae Johnson leading the way. But expect the Irish to use the portal for enhancements in the defensive backfield.
