AC Milan and Lazio have opened talks over a possible winter move for Ruben Loftus-Cheek, according to Calciomercato.

The 29-year-old is open to a switch to the capital, where he would be reunited with Maurizio Sarri, a coach under whom he previously thrived at Chelsea in the 2018/19 campaign.

Loftus-Cheek’s situation at Milan has become increasingly delicate in recent months, as competition in midfield has intensified under Massimiliano Allegri.

Despite flashes of quality, he has struggled to secure a guaranteed starting role. This has prompted him to seriously consider a move that would yield more consistent game time, with a place in England’s squad for the 2026 World Cup next summer in view.

Sarri has reportedly requested his signing to add physicality and drive to Lazio’s midfield department.

Talks between Milan and Lazio are revolving around a loan formula with an option or obligation to buy, which would help Lazio navigate their tight financial constraints.

However, a swap deal is also on the cards, given Milan’s interest in Lazio midfielder Mario Gila.

Rossoneri sporting director Igli Tare will continue negotiations with his former employers to reach a solution that suits all parties.

Sitting second in the Serie A table after 16 matches, Milan are in the title race and will be eyeing reinforcements to aid their Scudetto pursuit.

Lazio, meanwhile, have had a less successful campaign. They are eighth in the standings, three points shy of Como in the race for the last European spot, despite having played one game more.
