The Kyle Tucker free agency took a rise to a higher price point on Tuesday.

Reports emerged, including from ESPN’s Jesse Rogers, that the New York Mets have offered Tucker a shorter-term deal for $50 million per year.

That looms large for other teams, like the Toronto Blue Jays, who also want Tucker.

At least on that front, there’s an update for the Blue Jays, too.

Rogers reports “that the Toronto Blue Jays have also made a long-term offer to Tucker.”

That makes it sound as if the Blue Jays are trying to provide Tucker with the security of additional years on a deal, while the Mets are trying to blow him away with a short-term contract where he’d get paid highly and, if things go well, get a chance for one more big payday when he becomes a free agent again in a couple years.

It’s not clear which side Tucker would prefer.

The Mets may not be the only team considering the short-term approach, either. The Los Angeles Dodgers are thought to view Tucker more through that sort of lens, as well.

Toronto’s chances of landing Tucker could come down to what he’s looking for in a contract structure.

It’s not like the Blue Jays will be short-changing him. It’s likely they’d be offering between $35-45 million per year, potentially for 8-10 years.

Tucker would be a gigantic offseason win for Toronto. And now it appears the bidding war is finally, officially on.
