Tuesday's HS basketball: Marion County first round, Super 25 results

Three. Three. Three. Three.

The first 3 ½ minutes of Tuesday’s first round Marion County Tournament game started out about perfect as possible for Decatur Central junior Nash Sigmund, who drilled four 3-pointers on his first four attempts as the Hawks went on to defeat Speedway 77-61.

“He’s an elite shooter and we did a pretty good job of finding him,” Decatur Central coach Bryan Surber said.

Sigmund finished with 24 points on 8-for-12 shooting from the 3-point line. Decatur Central (11-1) led the entire way but could not shake a stubborn Speedway (4-6), which trailed by just seven points with 4:29 left. The Hawks finally put it on ice with an 11-0 run.

“I thought we were really good in spurts, and I thought we were really bad in spurts,” Surber said. “We didn’t have the focus defensively that I thought we would have. But they had some guys who made shots who hadn’t shot a lot from the 3-point line and tried to keep the ball out of (Drew Matelic’s) hands. They made us pay. Good job by them.”

Part of Sigmund’s job, in addition to making outside shots, was face guarding the 6-7 Matelic all over the floor. Matelic, who came in averaging a shade under 27 points per game, still managed to score 24 to lead the Sparkplugs. Kyle Merlie added 12 points on four 3-pointers.

Decatur Central will have to turn the page quickly to prepare for Class 4A No. 5 Pike, which defeated Brebeuf Jesuit 57-50 in another first round game at Brebeuf. The Hawks will be on the road again.

“I’ve been doing this a long time at Decatur, and I tell our kids every year this is probably one of the best high school tournaments in the nation when it comes down to talent and size of schools,” Surber said. “We’ve gotten off to a really good start, and we want to show up and play well and hopefully it’s good enough to win. We’ve got to be tough. We’re outsized, so we have to be tough.”

Decatur Central has not reached the semifinal round of the Marion County Tournament since 1996.

“It’s going to take elite toughness, and we have to take care of the basketball,” Surber said. “Everybody wants to see this game to see where we’re at. Are we going to prove them right or wrong? I love this group. We’ll show up and compete (Wednesday) and see what happens.”
