49ers add more depth to their TE room after George Kittle's injury

The San Francisco 49ers lost tight end George Kittle to a torn Achilles in last week’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field, leaving the team with just Luke Farrell and Jake Tonges on the gameday roster for the rest of the contest.

On Tuesday, San Francisco put Kittle on injured reserve and signed Brayden Willis to the 53-man roster from their own practice squad. However, the 49ers didn’t feel this was enough at the position.

The team announced on Wednesday that they’ve signed tight end Hayden Rucci to their practice squad.

Rucci, 24, is the son of former New England Patriots offensive lineman Todd Rucci, who is a member of New England’s All-1990s team. The younger Rucci played at Wisconsin, where he caught 17 passes for 200 yards and a touchdown.

After five years with the Badgers, he went pro and signed with the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent. He appeared in four games for Miami earlier this year but wasn’t targeted on offense.

Rucci spent some time with the Detroit Lions last month before getting waived and re-signing with the Dolphins practice squad.

Things would have to be dire for the 49ers to call him up this week, but he could be an intriguing piece to sign to a reserve/futures deal.
