Brian Johnson is at a sort of crossroads now.
Johnson, the Washington Commanders‘ passing game coordinator/assistant head coach, interviewed for the Commanders’ offensive coordinator job, but was not chosen by Dan Quinn. Quinn chose David Blough, whom many inside and outside the building consider the right choice for the job.
So what does Johnson choose to do now? How does Johnson feel about Dan Quinn not selecting him to be the offensive coordinator? Of course we all hope things work out well for David Blough, but Johnson is human. He knows he is much more experienced than Blough. Johnson also knows Quinn is well aware of his coaching experience.
What is Johnson’s offensive coaching experience? Though only eight years older than Blough, Johnson at 38 has been very busy. He hasn’t had any difficulty finding jobs to coach offense. Being a college quarterback at Utah, Johnson coached quarterbacks at Utah before becoming their offensive coordinator (2010-2013).

When Dan Mullen was head coach at Mississippi State, it was Johnson, whom Mullen hired to coach Dak Prescott during his last two seasons. After a season at the Houston Cougars (offensive coordinator), Mullen gave Johnson a call again to go to the SEC and the Florida Gators, where Johnson coached quarterbacks (2018-2019) and was the offensive coordinator (2020).
Nick Sirianni of the Eagles then hired Johnson for two seasons as quarterbacks coach before elevating him to offensive coordinator. But Johnson was fired after the 2023 season, and Kliff Kingsbury hired Johnson to be his passing game coordinator.
Consequently, after not getting the job as Commanders offensive coordinator, does Brian Johnson want to remain on the coaching staff working for the guy (Blough) whom Johnson might feel unfairly passed up Johnson? If Johnson is upset, wanting to get out of Ashburn, he most likely won’t have trouble finding work.
Who knows, perhaps Johnson has a good enough relationship with Blough, might he actually choose to remain on the staff? Of course it is ‘possible’, but wouldn’t we all understand if Johnson is already making calls to see who might be interested in his coaching experience?
