Chelsea’s January transfer window continues to build momentum as the club works on both arrivals and exits.
With Liam Rosenior now shaping his squad for the second half of the season, the Blues are reportedly closing in on a new defensive signing while preparing to make a decision on one of their long-forgotten strikers.
Chelsea reach agreement with Jeremy Jacquet
Chelsea appear to have made a major breakthrough in their pursuit of Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet. The 21-year-old French centre-back has been on the radar of several top clubs, including Arsenal, but reports now suggest Chelsea have reached an agreement on personal terms with the player. The club have also prepared a contract and are continuing negotiations with Rennes to finalise the transfer fee.
Jacquet, who was suspended for Rennes’ latest Ligue 1 fixture against Le Havre, is not missing due to a pending transfer, but his move to Stamford Bridge is gathering pace.
Chelsea’s recruitment team have reportedly travelled to France to try and lower Rennes’ €65m (£56.4m) asking price, which would represent a record sale for the Ligue 1 side.
The Blues view Jacquet as a crucial addition to their backline, offering both athleticism and composure as Rosenior looks to reinforce his defensive options before the window closes.
David Datro Fofana’s Chelsea future in doubt
While one deal edges closer, another departure could soon be confirmed. David Datro Fofana, the Ivorian forward signed from Molde in 2023, has endured a difficult spell at Chelsea with just four senior appearances to his name.
After a series of loan spells across Europe, most recently with Fatih Karagumruk in Turkey, the 23-year-old has now been recalled early by the club amid growing interest in his services.
Several clubs in England and across Europe are reportedly pushing for a permanent move for Fofana, with Chelsea open to letting him leave if a suitable offer arrives.
His development has been hindered by constant movement between clubs, and both parties are now said to be exploring a clean break. The Blues are hoping to offload fringe players like Fofana to streamline the squad and create financial flexibility for future signings.
Chelsea’s approach this window reflects a clear strategy under Rosenior’s leadership, securing promising young defenders while reshaping the squad with decisive exits. With Jacquet close to joining and Fofana likely heading for the exit, Stamford Bridge could soon see another significant reshuffle before the window shuts.
