Wisconsin starting guard earns Big Ten Player of the Week nods

Wisconsin Badgers guard John Blackwell pocketed his second Big Ten Player of the Week nod of the 2025 campaign on Monday.

Blackwell, who previously earned the recognition the week of Dec. 8, averaged 23.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.0 boards to guide UW to a 2-0 mark against Minnesota and Rutgers on Jan. 13 and Jan. 17, respectively. The 6-foot-4 veteran was one of two Big Ten playmakers to pocket the nod this week alongside Maryland guard Diggy Coit.

Most notably, the Michigan native drilled a buzzer-beating 3-point look to lift the Badgers over the Golden Gophers in Minneapolis on Jan. 13, a game in which he finished with 27 tallies, six rebounds and five dimes off an 8-of-14 mark from the field in 34 minutes of action.

Against the Scarlet Knights, Blackwell poured in 19 points, five rebounds and three assists in 32 minutes on the hardwood, marking the 13th game of the 2025 season in which he accumulated at least 10 points.

Through 17 appearances, the third-year Badger is averaging 18.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists in over 32 minutes per game. He ranks second on the team in scoring and rebounding behind transfer guard Nick Boyd and veteran center Nolan Winter, respectively.

Wisconsin currently sits at 13-5 (5-2 Big Ten) with a match against Penn State slated for Jan. 22 in University Park.
