Seahawks designate RB George Holani to return to practice

The Seattle Seahawks suffered a terrible blow to their ground attack earlier this week. On Monday, it was announced backup running back Zach Charbonnet – who scored 12 rushing touchdowns this year – was lost for the rest of the season with an ACL injury. Charbonnet’s knee was injured during Seattle’s 41-6 beatdown of the San Francisco 49ers in the Divisional Round of the playoffs.

Losing Charbonnet leaves a considerable gap to be filled behind Kenneth Walker III, but perhaps help is on the way. The Seahawks designated second-year running back George Holani to return to practice on Wednesday. This opens a potential opportunity for him to return to the active 53-man roster for the NFC Championship against the Los Angeles Rams this coming Sunday.

Holani had been buried on Seattle’s running back depth chart behind the aforementioned Walker and Charbonnet, finding most of his playing time on special teams. However, he did rush for 73 yards and a touchdown in limited action with the offense. Holani injured his hamstring during the 30-24 win over the Tennessee Titans in Week 12 and has been sidelined ever since.

I have long been an advocate for George Holani, and I hope he is able to take advantage of this opportunity. I think he was a bit of a “steal” for the Seahawks to not only get him as an undrafted free agent, but manage to keep him on the practice squad after releasing him last season following final roster cuts. Had the Seahawks made a similar decision this summer, they would not have gotten him back.
