A few days ago, Aaron Rodgers was done with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
After Mike Tomlin stepped down as head coach, news broke throughout the league that Rodgers had little to no desire to return to Pittsburgh, following the departure of the man who brought him to the organization in the first place.
But has that changed with Saturday’s news?
Rodgers’ former head coach, Mike McCarthy, is the new man in charge in Pittsburgh, and the two won a Super Bowl 15 years ago against the very same Steelers franchise while with the Green Bay Packers.
Although no one knows how close the two still are after years of going their separate ways in the NFL and McCarthy taking a sabbatical following his departure from the Dallas Cowboys, it opens the doors for a possible reunion.
Rodgers has not yet decided whether he will retire this season or give it one more go at a second ring. If he does decide to hang it up, his final game and play will be unceremonious, as the Steelers were blown out at home against the Houston Texans, with Rodgers throwing a pick-six as his final pass of the game.
Although the signing of McCarthy has been reported not to be a fishing lure to get Rodgers back into the building, it could be a positive step towards bringing the future Hall of Famer to commit to one final season with Pittsburgh.
While the Steelers need a QB of the future, they do not own a premium pick in the upcoming NFL Draft in their home city. On top of that, the QB class for 2026 is seen to be historically shallow, with possibly only Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza seen as a proper first-round selection.
With the 2027 class promising to have more depth with the likes of Arch Manning, Dante Moore, and Julian Sayin possibly up for grabs, it could behoove the Steelers to see Rodgers and McCarthy have one final campaign together before attempting to find their QB of the future in next year’s draft.
