The Pittsburgh Steelers will be bringing Mike McCarthy in to serve as their next head coach, and the move may not be the most popular among Steelers and NFL fans.
The news came on Saturday that the Steelers were striking a deal with McCarthy, a Pittsburgh native and former Super Bowl champion with the Packers, to return to his home city to lead the franchise. He will become just the fourth head coach to lead the program since 1969, taking over after Mike Tomlin stepped down after 19 years leading the franchise following this past season.
Fans seem hesitant about the hire, as many struggle to see a clear, definitive difference between Tomlin’s track record as head coach and what McCarthy will bring to the table. Some seem to view McCarthy as the offensive-minded version of their former head coach, who had been facing significant criticism from Steelers fans after the 2025 season ended with the seventh straight playoff loss for the team as they fell to the Texans in the Wild Card Round.
Those same fans point toward McCarthy’s two Wild Card losses in his last three postseason appearances to support their unfavorable view of the hire, as well as the fact that McCarthy has missed the playoffs in four of his last seven seasons as a head coach. Check out some of the internet’s reactions below as they respond to the coaching move with trepidation.
