The New York Yankees haven’t added a ton of talent this offseason, but if they can get back a lot of players from injury for the 2026 season, their roster will be in a very good place.
One of those injuries is to Anthony Volpe. A shoulder issue forced him to get surgery, and he’s now expected to miss the first few months of the season. But with pitchers and catchers close to reporting, Volpe’s status is worth knowing.
Bryan Hoch of MLB.com revealed Volpe’s status update, which included a positive four-word comment from Brian Cashman on how hard Volpe’s been working to come back.
Anthony Volpe’s injury recovery update features a positive four-word message from Brian Cashman
“Anthony Volpe is ‘working his tail off’ at the Tampa complex as he rehabs from surgery, Brian Cashman said,” Hoch reports. “The Yankees have previously said they don’t expect Volpe back until after April.”
Hearing that Volpe is “working his tail off” to recover from his shoulder surgery is a good sign for the Yankees. While he struggled for much of the 2025 season, it could be attributed to his shoulder issue, which wasn’t addressed for nearly the entire season.
The torn labrum isn’t an easy recovery, and Volpe is set to miss some time to begin the 2026 season. But if he can recover properly and return to the lineup at full strength, he could be a quality option for the rest of the year.

His 2025 numbers weren’t great, as he hit .212 with a .663 OPS. But, with his injury coming in early May of 2025, his numbers before the injury, through April, were a lot more encouraging.
Volpe was hitting .237 with a strong .784 OPS. He still had a solid May, hitting .242 with a .703 OPS, but in the following months, he struggled mightily. In the 97 games after May, Volpe hit .195 with a .608 OPS.
His injury clearly impacted his play, and hopefully, once he fully recovers, he can return to his early 2025 form and be a strong contributor for a Yankees team looking to compete for a World Series in a tough AL East.
