Steelers predicted to part ways with former Pro Bowler

Changes are coming at every level of the Pittsburgh Steelers organization, and prominent insider Gerry Dulac predicted one pass catcher could be getting axed over the next few months.

During Wednesday’s Steelers chat on the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Dulac was asked which players could be possibly released this offseason — and he believes former Pro Bowl tight end Jonnu Smith’s days might be numbered.

“Well, I think they will start with a TE who was brought in this season,” Dulac wrote.

On June 30, the Steelers traded star safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and a 2027 fifth-round draft pick to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for Smith, cornerback Jalen Ramsey, and a 2027 seventh-round draft pick.

Smith signed a one-year, $12 million extension after being acquired by Pittsburgh, but releasing him this offseason would save the Steelers approximately $7 million in cap space.

Despite being the 10th highest-paid tight end in 2025, Smith’s production as a receiver was abysmal, as the former Pro Bowler caught just 38 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for another 70 yards and one touchdown.
