Former Georgia Bulldogs and current Chicago Bears running back D’Andre Swift has been named as a potential NFL cap casualty, per Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report. Swift is ranked as the Bears’ second-most likely cap casualty behind tight end Cole Kmet.
Why would Chicago move on from D’Andre Swift? Well, the Bears are $17.4 million over the 2026 salary cap with the 2026 league year approaching in March. Chicago will have to restructure some contracts at a minimum and will likely have to cut a few players in order to free up cap space.
Swift enjoyed a productive 2025 season where he helped Chicago earn their first playoff win since 2010. Swift was the Bears’ leading rusher with 223 carries for 1,087 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns. The former Georgia star also added 34 receptions for 299 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown (all of Swift’s receiving and rushing numbers led Chicago running backs).
The Bears could look to move on from Swift in order to save $7.5 million if they cut him before June 1. The Bears had a strong season from rookie Kyle Monangai and could envision a larger role for Monangai.
However, Swift has familiarity with Chicago coach Ben Johnson, so that helps his cause. Historically, Johnson has relied on a pair of running backs in his offense, so the Bears would need to acquire another running back via the draft or free agency to help take over the production they’d lose if they elect to cut Swift.
Kyle Monangai’s efficiency and Ben Johnson track record for creating a dynamic rushing attack could have him in cut consideration territory. The Bears have to find ways to get cheaper at some positions and pairing Monangai with a rookie running back could be a way to do that. Swift averaged 3 yards before contact so the Bears offensive line and scheme were doing a lot of the work for him.
Alex Ballentine thinks Swift is a potential cap casualty and it is easy to see why. NFL teams are devaluing the running back and Swift could be the next running back to have to find a new home as a result.
