Oklahoma baseball names opening-day starter

Oklahoma baseball coach Skip Johnson is pretty fired up about this Sooners team this spring. He previewed his team and talked about their trip to Texas to open the season earlier this week.

He also answered one question at the top of every Sooners baseball fan’s mind.

Cam Johnson will get the first start of the season when OU opens against Texas Tech on Feb. 13 at Globe Life Field in Arlington. Skip Johnson – no relation – lost all three of his weekend starters from last year’s NCAA Tournament team, leaving questions about the rotation heading into 2026. Based on what he saw from Johnson in the fall, the former LSU transfer has earned the nod.

Cam Johnson joined Oklahoma ahead before last season from LSU. He started seven games, but largely struggled, pitching to a 5.57 earned-run average in 21 innings. Those numbers don’t correspond to his expectation, though, as the 6-foot-6 junior was ranked as the No. 11 prospect in the country coming out of high school.

The Sooners will enter the season ranked in the Top 25 in one of the major national polls as they checked in at No. 19 in Baseball America’s preseason poll. They were left out of D1Baseball’s, USA TODAY’s and Perfect Games.

Regardless, if Skip Johnson gets pitching similar to what he did last year from his rotation, his lineup should give the Sooners plenty of opportunity to improve on last year’s 14-16 record.
