Texas A&M (17-5, 7-2 SEC) enters Saturday’s massive home test against Florida just three days after falling to Alabama on the road 100-97 in one of the more exciting games of the season thus far, coming down to the final possession. After leading 77-71 with eight minutes left, Alabama continued to make clutch shots down the stretch, while the Aggies failed to make key stops in the final minutes.
Sitting at 7-2, tied with Florida atop the SEC standings, hosting the Gators presents another Quad 1A opportunity against the defending champs, and will be the toughest challenge yet, especially from a size perspective, given Florida’s elite front court led by leading scorer Thomas Haugh.
Overall, Texas A&M is likely three wins away in conference play to securing an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, which, amid head coach Bucky McMillan’s first season at the helm, would be a significant acheivment during the early part of tenure, while his roster filled with veteran transfer portal additions, led by senior forward Rashaun Agee, are looking to wreak havoc in the postseason.
After losing to Alabama, Texas A&M dropped one spot in the NET rankings to No. 36, and according to ESPN’ Bracketolgist Joe Lunardi, the Aggies sit right at the 8-seed line as his 31st-ranked team, and have a reported 85% chance to make the NCAA Tournament.
After hosting Florida, Texas A&M will host Missouri, followed by tough road tests against Vanderbilt and Arkansas. Home games against Ole Miss, Texas, and Kentucky are winnable and will solidify the Aggies’ NCAA Tournament bid.
