Ben Foster has shared his thoughts on Kobbie Mainoo following the midfielder’s display in Manchester United’s draw against Tottenham at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Mainoo played the entire match, and it was his clever pass that set up Bryan Mbeumo for the opening goal. The 20-year-old has enjoyed a notable turnaround in form since Michael Carrick took over as interim head coach.
Since taking charge, Carrick has started Mainoo in all four of his league matches so far, and Mainoo seems to be thriving with regular game time.
The youngster was again paired with Casemiro in midfield, a partnership that appears to be growing stronger under Carrick’s guidance.
Ben Foster comments on Mainoo after Manchester United match
Mainoo has registered two assists in four games since Michael Carrick’s appointment, and the Stockport native looked comfortable once again at the weekend.
The midfielder has been showing steady signs of improvement, providing a composed presence in midfield throughout the win over Spurs.
After United’s 2-0 victory over Tottenham, Ben Foster spoke about Mainoo’s form during an episode of his Fozcast podcast. He shared his thoughts on how good it is to see him playing well again.
“Brilliant, mate [Mainoo’s performance],” he said. “What a player. Honestly.”
The conversation also touched on Mainoo’s role for England during Euro 2024, particularly his impact during the final against Germany. Foster didn’t hold back in offering more praise for the young midfielder.
Ben Foster questions Kobbie Mainoo’s absence under former Man Utd manager Ruben Amorim
Foster was puzzled by Mainoo’s lack of playing time under Ruben Amorim, who was dismissed as United boss in July.
The former United goalkeeper believes there must have been a falling out between the two that led to Mainoo’s exclusion from the squad.
“There’s something [going] on there,” Foster said on his Fozcast podcast.
“There’s got to have been a massive fallout because there’s no way you can watch that player on Saturday do what he did and him not have been in the team because he is, you can tell he’s a player.
Mainoo didn’t start any Premier League games under Amorim before the manager was let go. His situation changed quickly after Carrick took over, with Mainoo moving straight back into the starting XI for all four league matches since then.
