Texas A&M basketball suffers heartbreaking 86-85 loss to Missouri

The tallest team in the Southeastern Conference dominated the paint and handed Texas A&M its third consecutive loss on Wednesday night in heart-wrenching fashion, as the Missouri Tigers exited Reed Arena with an 86-85 win over the Aggies.

Texas A&M displayed much improvement shooting to open the contest, compared to the 0-of-27 start against Florida, as the Aggies shot 75% from the field and 80% from three-point range through the first five minutes. However, the Maroon and White struggled greatly to contain Missouri’s size and physicality. Mizzou recorded 56 points in the paint, while also securing five steals and three blocks.

While the Aggies faced much difficulty stopping the Tigers inside throughout the game, Bucky McMillan’s unit battled back to take an 85-84 lead in the final minute. With 17 seconds on the clock, Missouri center Shawn Phillips Jr. sealed the game with a devastating dunk on an alley-oop assist from Mark Mitchell.

Wednesday’s loss puts Texas A&M at 17-7 (7-4 in SEC play), with seven regular-season matchups remaining before the SEC Tournament. While the result wasn’t what the Aggies would want, especially for March Madness aspirations, there is still plenty of basketball to be played.

McMillan’s squad has proven to be a force in the league after being picked to finish 13th during the preseason. Moving forward, the Aggies must find ways to establish force and physicality in the paint, however.

Texas A&M will travel to Nashville, Tennessee, to take on No. 19 Vanderbilt at Memorial Gym on Saturday. Tipoff against the Commodores is scheduled for 12 p.m. CT and will be broadcast live on the SEC Network.
