Brewers reportedly agree to deal with veteran infielder Luis Rengifo

PHOENIX – Just like that, it appears the Milwaukee Brewers have their third baseman for 2026.

According to a report from MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, Luis Rengifo has agreed to terms on a one-year pact worth $3.5 million with another $1.5 million available in incentives.

The deal, according to Feinsand, also includes a $10 million mutual option for 2027.

As of early Friday evening, Feb. 13 the Brewers had yet to announce the transaction.

To see Milwaukee make a move for Rengifo is hardly surprising considering the position had been thrown into tumult since the surprise trade of last season’s starter, Caleb Durbin, to the Boston Red Sox on Feb. 9.

David Hamilton, acquired in the Durbin deal, and Jett Williams were the most likely candidates for the job heading into camp until the Rengifo addition, with prospects Brock Wilken, Luke Adams and Jesús Made also expected to see time at third.

In Rengifo, the Brewers are buying low on a seven-year veteran of the major leagues who is coming off a down 2025 after compiling three straight productive seasons for the Los Angeles Angels.

Luis Rengifo hit .238 with nine home runs and 43 runs batted in with an OPS of .622 and 10 stolen bases in a career-high 147 games with the Angels last year.

A switch-hitter who turns 29 on Feb. 26, Rengifo hit .238 with nine home runs and 43 runs batted in with an OPS of .622 and 10 stolen bases in a career-high 147 games with the Angels last year.

Rengifo’s strikeout rate isn’t awful (19.2%, 62nd percentile in the majors) but he doesn’t walk much, either (6.1%, 24th percentile). In addition, he struggled hitting the ball hard (24th percentile or lower in three key categories) with just 15th percentile bat speed.

Defensively, Rengifo also struggled, accounting for minus-seven outs above average and minus-five defensive runs saved in 76 games at third with a below-average throwing arm.

One facet of Rengifo’s game is right up the Brewers’ alley – versatility. He also played 74 games at second base and 10 more spread between all three outfield positions.

Rengifo even logged a couple innings at shortstop.

He represents the second veteran to reportedly agree to terms with the Brewers this week; catcher Gary Sánchez is also expected to come aboard on a one-year deal to serve as backup to William Contreras.
