Min Woo Lee finished just behind Collin Morikawa at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am on Sunday.
Lee’s driver has always been a key part of his game, and it played a significant role again during the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am this week.
But the 27-year-old was not using his familiar old driver at Pebble Beach this time around.
Over the last six months, Lee has made noticeable improvements to his swing, helping him become one of the top players in the world.
Morikawa may have taken the win, but the 27-year-old Australian had plenty to be positive about as he left the course.
And Chris Gotterup is likely owed a drink or two after Lee’s impressive T-2 finish at Pebble Beach.
Min Woo Lee reveals how watching Chris Gotterup influenced his driver switch
Gotterup has made quite an impact on the pro scene over the last seven months.
Since July, he has picked up three PGA Tour titles, and much of that success has come from his impressive work off the tee.
The two played together at the WM Phoenix Open last week, and while it was not obvious at the time, Gotterup had an impact on Lee’s decision-making.
After shooting a final round 65 at Pebble Beach, Min Woo spoke to reporters about the new driver he had in play for the week.
“Yeah, new driver. It was a new Quantum so I needed – not needed, but I wanted to get into the new Callaway driver. I’ve heard a lot of great things about it,” he stated.
“Did a couple range sessions very quickly but didn’t make the cut just because I drive it pretty good normally with the previous driver. I thought it was a good time after last week at Waste.
“Didn’t drive it that well, especially when I was somewhat in contention. Just wanted to feel a little bit more of the club when I was swinging. It was a little bit whippy for me I guess with the swing speed that I have.”
The Aussie then credited Gotterup for giving him an extra nudge toward making the change.
“A lot of it was playing with Chris Gotterup.
“He won last week and he just had the ball on a string with low spin with similar speeds, I guess.
“Yeah, just wanted to try it out and yeah, worked out this week,” the 27-year-old concluded.
Min Woo Lee shares thoughts on his new putter after strong Pebble Beach showing
It was not just the driver that was new in Min Woo Lee’s bag this week.
He also put a new Callaway putter into play, and it seemed to work well for him on the greens.
“And the putter, it’s a new one,“ the Australian golfer said.
“It’s unreleased. I don’t know if Callaway would honestly want me to say anything about it. It is a very good putter, I really liked it.
“I feel like even the putts that I didn’t hit perfect, they somewhat got close and that’s what I was trying to strive for. Yeah, it’s a good step. They’re both going to be in the bag for a while.”
His decision paid off quickly at Pebble Beach, where he finished 26th in strokes gained off the tee and second in strokes gained putting.
If Min Woo picks up another PGA Tour win soon, there may be one player he will need to thank: Chris Gotterup.
