Carolina Hurricanes goalie Brandon Bussi is used to racking up praise for his play on the ice. Now he’s earning applause from fans for his work off it.
Bussi signed a three-year extension with the Canes, and part of the deal includes the Carolina Hurricanes Foundation making a $10,000 donation to the Autism Society of North Carolina.
Bussi’s younger brother, Dylan, has autism, and the goalie wears his mask with pride to raise awareness.
The nonprofit says the money will go toward supporting its camps and weekend retreats, noting the importance of Bussi’s ongoing efforts to highlight its work.
“There’s an opportunity every time he’s in net, where people are looking at the roster. If they see ‘brother with autism’ or they see he contributed to the Autism Society of North Carolina, that’s one ongoing opportunity to get people the help they need – but also for folks who may want to get involved, it’s an opportunity for them to learn about what we do,” said David Laxton of the Autism Society of North Carolina.
Bussi has been a force in his first season with the team, setting the NHL record for most wins by a goalie in their first 25 games.
