Finland has been well represented in the NHL, with several of the league’s best calling the European nation home. 

When it comes to Olympic competition, however, Finland largely struggled when it first started competing on an international scale. Despite Olympic men’s hockey starting in 1920, the Finns didn’t begin competing until 1952. 

Ahead of 2026, Finland had competed in 18 Olympics. The Finns didn’t medal in the event until 1988, their ninth Olympic appearance, and they took the silver medal. Finland has won one gold medal in men’s hockey, and it came in 2022, and they did it without the help of their NHL contingent as they were barred from Olympic competition that year.
