Bears CB Nahshon Wright shares update on contract extension talks

The Chicago Bears have some important decisions to make about in-house free agents before the start of the new league year in March, and that includes Pro Bowl cornerback Nahshon Wright, who played a key role the defense’s success in taking the ball away.

Wright, who signed a one-year, league-minimum deal last offseason, had a breakout year with a league-best eight takeaways as part of a defense that totaled an NFL-best 33 takeaways. Wright was a standout during training camp and preseason, and he found his way into a starting role with injuries to Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon. Wright, alongside safety Kevin Byard, was a standout on defense despite some struggles as a unit.

With free agency just a few weeks away, Wright is close to getting an opportunity to explore the free agent market, where his big 2025 season will earn him a raise. But he made it clear that he’d love to be back with the Bears in 2026.

“I had a great season in Chicago due to the way we played,” Wright told Sirius XM NFL Radio. “I would love to be back in Chicago, but I don’t necessarily know what’s going to happen.”

Wright has made it clear on several occasions that he’d like to return to the Bears, where he was reunited with defensive backs coach Al Harris, but is Chicago interested in a reunion? It certainly sounds like it.

“There’s been some conversation,” Wright said. “I know they contacted my agent and we have a meeting scheduled. No contract details have been discussed or anything but I think there is some interest. I guess I’ll know next week.”

While it’s not a guarantee that Wright will be re-signed, it’s certainly noteworthy that general manager Ryan Poles is exploring the option of bringing back one of the defense’s rising stars. But the Bears have some other big decisions to make about other in-house free agents, including safeties Kevin Byard and Jaquan Brisker, as well as addressing the defensive trenches this offseason. We’ll see if the mutual interest for a return to Chicago pays off for Wright.
