When the 2025-26 basketball season ends for the Auburn Tigers, they will be looking to add to the staff. According to Justin Hokanson of On3, head coach Steven Pearl will look to add a general manager prior to the transfer portal window opening on April 7.
In a world of college athletics that now features NIL and revenue sharing, Auburn is going to need someone to be a front office leader for the basketball program. During the summer, then head coach Bruce Pearl hired Matt Gatens to be the Tigers’ General Manager. However, when Pearl retired, Gatens was promoted to an assistant coach on the bench. It was a homecoming for Gatens, as he was part of the Tigers staff when Auburn played in the 2019 Final Four.
The Auburn roster saw major change after the 2025 Final Four run, and only one player from that roster, guard Tahaad Pettiford, returned. The Tigers are currently 15-13, and a bubble team is trying to stay in the NCAA Tournament conversation. Due to the struggles that this team has faced, some improvements to the roster will be needed. Auburn will need someone to step into the general manager role to assist Steven Pearl in constructing next season’s roster.
