Iran conflict immediately wipes out one sporting event in Middle East

A two-day Formula One tire test in Bahrain was reportedly cancelled Saturday amid airstrikes between the Iran, Israel and the United States.

According to a report by The Race, Pirelli scheduled a wet tire test before F1’s Melbourne opener with Mercedes and McLaren, but the tire manufacturer cancelled the test for security reasons.

“All Pirelli personnel currently in Manama are safe in their hotels,” a Pirelli spokesperson told Josh Suttill and Scott Mitchell-Malm. “The company is working to ensure their safety and arrange their return to Italy and the UK as soon as possible.”

Forbes’ Maury Brown suggested a global conflict could pose many obstacles for Formula One beyond the cancellation of Saturday’s test.

“Already, teams are adjusting travel arrangements and rerouting where flight paths cross near the conflict,” Brown wrote, “which has the capacity to turn into a wide-ranging war should other countries in the region be pulled into it.”

The Formula 1 calendar includes events in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia on April 12 and April 19.
