The Colorado State men’s basketball team has been selected to host a first-round NIT game. The Rams will face Saint Joseph’s to open play in the postseason tournament.

Saint Joseph’s is in Philadelphia and competes in the Atlantic-10 conference. Longtime hoops fans likely remember the Saint Joseph’s teams led by Jameer Nelson and Delonte West, who helped lead the Hawks to a perfect regular season in 2003-04.

The game between CSU and Saint Joseph’s in the first round of the NIT will begin at 9 p.m. Mountain and 11 p.m. Eastern from Moby Arena in Fort Collins.

Saint Joseph is led by Steve Donahue, who is in his first season leading the Hawks. Donahue is in his 25th season as a Division I coach with stops at Cornell, Boston College and Penn prior to Saint Joseph’s. He’s 353-355 all-time. Donahue was named the Atlantic-10 Coach of the Year.

CSU is led by Ali Farokhmanesh, who is in his first season as a head coach. He had been a CSU assistant since 2018 under former head coach Niko Medved. Farokhmanesh is 21-12.

Saint Joseph’s is 22-11 overall and the Hawks went 13-5 to finish third in the A-10. Saint Joseph’s lost to VCU in the A-10 semifinals.

CSU is 21-12 overall and the Rams lost in the Mountain West quarterfinals.

The teams share a few common opponents. Both played Virginia Tech, with Saint Joseph’s losing 94-59 on the road and the Rams losing 66-64 in the Bahamas to the Hokies.

Saint Joseph’s lost 99-85 at UNLV. The Rams beat the Rebels at home and on the road (70-62 at home and 91-86 on the road).

Saint Joseph’s swept Loyola Chicago (85-64 on the road and 75-61 at home) and the Rams won 80-67 at Loyola Chicago.

NIT bracket

The 32-team bracket is broken into four eight-team regions with the top four in each region seeded. CSU is the No. 3 in the region led by No. 1 New Mexico.

The winner of CSU and Saint Joseph’s advances to the second round to face the winner of No. 2 Cal (21-11) and UIC (19-15). Those teams also play at 9 p.m. MT/11 p.m. ET on March 18.

The second round game will be either March 21-22, but time and location are not yet set.

  • Justice Ajogbor: The 6-foot-10 center averages 2.2 blocks per game to go along with five rebounds per contest. He was named the A-10’s co-Defensive Player of the Year.
  • Jaiden Glover-Toscano: The 6-foot-6 guard leads the team in scoring at 15.8 points per game and is shooting 36% from 3-point range. He also averages 4.8 rebounds per game.

COLORADO STATE

  • Jevin Muniz: The 6-foot-6 guard was named third-team All-Mountain West. Muniz averages 4.9 assists per game and his 162 assists on the season is fifth in a single season in program history.
  • Kyle Jorgensen: The 6-foot-9 forward is second on the team in scoring at 11.9 points per game and is shooting 54% from the floor and 42% from 3-point range.
  • Brandon Rechsteiner: The 6-foot-1 guard leads the team in scoring at 12.2 points per game and is shooting 41% from 3-point range. His 85 made 3-pointers is tied for fourth-most in a single season in program history.
