Boston Red Sox fans aren’t in the best mood heading into the team’s 2026 home opener at Fenway Park today. The Red Sox are coming in at 1-5 after getting swept by the Houston Astros, extending their losing streak to five games.

There’s been a lot of pessimism and concern over Boston’s slow start this week, but Red Sox beat writer Chris Cotillo doesn’t think it’s time to panic just yet.

“A good homestand would go a long way,” Cotillo said on Thursday’s episode of “Foul Territory.” “A winning homestand and going on the road against two probably inferior opponents in St. Louis and Minnesota, that would be a good start.”

Boston has a tough opening homestand against the San Diego Padres and Milwaukee Brewers, both of whom made the playoffs last year. The Red Sox typically play well at Fenway Park, however, going 48-33 there in 2025.

Cotillo believes home-field advantage should help Boston as it looks to get back on track this weekend, especially coming off a much-needed off day. In particular, it should help the Red Sox offense wake up after scoring just 17 runs over their first six games.

The Padres also had to travel across the country after hosting the San Francisco Giants earlier this week, which presents an additional challenge for them.

“Just cleaner baseball, better performances from some individuals,” Cotillo continued. “It’s 1-5, it’s not 1-40, but I think the off day today will help and coming home… Home cooking should help them.”
