The New York Mets‘ offense hasn’t delivered this season in the way many would’ve hoped.

And when looking at fascinating streaks that Brett Baty, Jorge Polanco and Francisco Lindor are all on, there’s at least one place that can be pointed at as a potential culprit.

The thing they have in common right now: They aren’t walking.

Through Monday, April 13:

  • Baty has gone 54 plate appearances in a row without a walk.
  • Polanco has gone 47 plate appearances in a row without a walk.
  • Lindor has gone 42 plate appearances in a row without a walk.

Walks are far from the only way to be successful at the plate, of course.

But by the same token, walks are an indicator. A hitter who is walking is taking the right approach into the batter’s box — not expanding the zone, seeking his specific pitches to hit.

A total lack of walks points to a hitter who is overly aggressive and/or impatient.

Right now, the Mets need some of their top hitters to slow things down a bit and be more settled in the box.

Baty, Polanco and Lindor can all do damage by swinging, yes. But maybe it would occasionally behoove them to keep the bat on their shoulder once in a while.
