Eagles-Bucs winners, losers: Second-half offense struggles, young defensive stars shine

The Philadelphia Eagles remained undefeated with a 31-25 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. But what looked like a blowout win early for Nick Sirianni’s team turned into a near comeback for the Bucs.

Here are our winners and losers from the Eagles’ Week 4 victory.

Loser: Second-half offense

The Eagles were rolling in the first half. Jalen Hurts was doing a masterful job managing the offense, efficiently picking apart the Bucs’ defense through the air, moving the chains with his legs and handling Tampa Bay’s exotic blitzes with pre-snap prowess. But in the second half, the Eagles looked like they did in the first half against the Rams. Four of their first six second-half drives were three-and-outs. That made things even more difficult on the Eagles’ defense, which looked gassed in the Tampa heat. More questions for Kevin Patullo to answer for.

Winners: Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean

We’re going to lump these two 2024 draft picks together because they were both incredible. Mitchell and DeJean, the Eagles’ first-round and second-round picks in 2024, were everywhere. Mitchell had five pass breakups. DeJean had two breakups and a team-high nine tackles (eight solo). Another banner day for two of the best young defensive players in the league.

Loser: Edge rushers

This was the Eagles’ first game since Nolan Smith went on the IR with a reaggravated triceps injury, and they missed him dearly. The Eagles rolled with five edge rushers: Jalyx Hunt, Za’Darius Smith, Joshua Uche, Ogbo Okoronkwo and Patrick Johnson. Hunt and Smith started while Okoronkwo was lost early to an injury. No one really got home. Baker Mayfield was able to maneuver the pocket, which helped him on his 72-yard touchdown strike to Bucky Irving.

Winner: Moro Ojomo

While the pass rush struggled for most of the day, Ojomo stepped up when needed. The Bucs had a chance to tie the game with less than two minutes to go. But a blitz with an Ojomo stunt inside buried Mayfield for a massive sack. Ojomo swallowing up Mayfield left Tampa Bay with a third-and-23, and the Bucs failed to move the chains on the next two downs. Another significant play by Ojomo, who has continued to live up to the hype he earned in the preseason.

Winner: TE Dallas Goedert

When Goedert missed the Chiefs game in Week 2 with a knee injury, some wondered if that would be how his season would go. Goedert’s career has been hampered by injuries, and he’s only under contract through this year. But Goedert has been immense the last two weeks. Against the Rams, he caught a 33-yard touchdown that sparked the comeback. On Sunday, he had four receptions for 37 yards and two shovel-pass TDs. With three scores over the last two weeks, Goedert has already surpassed his 2024 total (two TDs).

Loser: S Andrew Mukuba

Mukuba is a ball-hawking rookie who has made some big plays already for this defense. But he clearly still has room to grow in coverage, because that rep on Emeka Egbuka’s 77-yard touchdown was rough. Mukuba played the intermediate route aggressively and let Egbuka get behind him. That’s a big no-no. Something he’ll have to learn from.

Winner: TE/ST Cameron Latu

Latu was signed to the active roster this week after the Eagles placed three players on injured reserve. It was an unfortunate way for a spot to open up, but Latu earned his place with his special teams potential. He was great in the preseason and nearly blocked a pair of punts against Kansas City. Latu finally got one in Tampa Bay, and Sydney Brown returned it for an easy first-quarter touchdown. Latu’s play was a tone-setter.
