Belgian great Remco Evenepoel completed a historic time trial cycling treble on Wednesday in France when he added the European title to Olympic gold from last year and the world title from last week.

Evenepoel dominated the 24 kilometres course from Loriol-sur-Drôme to Étoile-sur-Rhône 43 seconds ahead of Italian Filippo Ganna. Denmark’s Niklas Larsen trailed by 1 minute 8 seconds in third.

It was the second European title for Evenepoel, the first coming in 2019.

He now sets his sights on the road race where he also has an Olympic gold from Paris 2024 but had to settle for silver at the worlds in Rwanda on Sunday behind back-to-back champion Tadej Pogacar.

“I am super happy to take another title today,” the cyclingnews website quoted Evenepoel as saying. “Tomorrow I’m going to rest and then have some good training here, and I hope to be ready for Sunday.”

Tour de France champion Pogacar was not competing on Wednesday but is set to race on Sunday, along with Vuelta a Espana winner Jonas Vingegaard.
