CBS Sports has Florida basketball just outside top 5 despite 1-1 start

The Florida Gators dropped to No. 10 in both major polls — the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll and the AP Top 25 — after a 1-1 start to the season. However, CBS Sports wasn’t as quick to drop the Gators.

Gary Parrish published the list on Monday, just before the other rankings came in, and Todd Golden’s squad checks in at No. 6 in the Top 25 And 1 rankings heading into Week 2. In fact, Parrish has the Gators moving up from an update released just two days earlier. The main driver of that move is St. John’s dropping from the No. 1 spot, following an upset loss to Alabama.

“Alex Condon finished with 25 points and 10 rebounds in Thursday’s 104-64 win over North Florida,” Parrish wrote in a short excerpt provided for each team.

Condon returning to form is nice, especially after he fouled out of the Arizona game before the closing minutes. However, Parrish’s blurb skips over the main issue with the Gators right now: guard play.

After the Arizona loss, Parrish identified Xaivian Lee’s 5-for-17 night from the field as the key statistic. Lee was 4 of 11 against North Florida on Thursday and still hasn’t found his 3-point shot. The frontcourt rotation can only do so much without the guards backing them up.

Still, Parrish’s No. 6 ranking says that experts agree with Todd Golden. The backcourt will figure things out once they find their footing, and this is still a Sweet 16 team on paper. Of course, the Gators are chasing back-to-back national titles, and the fan base expects nothing less.

Florida plays its rival, Florida State, on Tuesday, which could impact these rankings. Parrish updates them daily.
