College volleyball: WVU Tech to start tournament play at Indiana-Kokomo

It potentially could be a big week for WVU Tech soccer, with both the men’s and women’s teams trying to sew up berths to the national tournament.

But the Golden Bears volleyball team is also ready for the postseason.

Tech (6-28 overall, 5-11 RSC) checks into the River States Conference Tournament as the No. 8 seed. That means a trip to No. 1 Indiana-Kokomo (27-5, 16-0) Tuesday night at 7 p.m.

The other first-round matchups will be No. 7 seed Shawnee State at No. 2 Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, No. 6 Indiana-Columbus at Rio Grande and No. 5 Indiana East at Indiana Southeast.

The semifinals will be played Friday, with the championship decided Saturday.

The Golden Bears dropped a 3-1 decision to the Cougars. Tech won the opening set 25-18 before the Cougars swept the next three 25-17, 25-10, 25-14.

True freshman Aniston Treadway, a Class A first-team all-stater for state champion Greenbrier West last season, is having a strong debut season for the Golden Bears. She has 264 kills, 72 digs and 24 blocks.

Greenbrier East alumna Naveah Wooding has 177 kills and 34 blocks. Shady Spring’s Peydon Smith has 702 serve receptions, 411 digs and 38 aces.

Ivana Burgos has 212 kills, 566 serve receptions and 275 digs. Addison White checks in with 390 assists and 216 digs. Anais Gonzalez leads the team with 412 assists.
