ELIZABETHTOWN — The cross country community descended on the Cobble Hill Golf Course to compete in the Section VII Championships on Saturday.
Beekmantown’s Nolan Laidman and Saranac’s Sienna Boulds won their respective races to claim the fastest times and berths in the state meet.
Laidman led a blistering boys’ race with a time of 15:20.45. The top five all ran sub-16 minute times, with four more going sub-16:30.
Following Laidman was AuSable Valley’s Reece Long and Seton Catholic’s Colby Chase to round out the top three.
Saranac senior Sean Dormann came in fourth, followed by Peru’s Michael Welc to have five schools represented in the top five.
The parity continued as Chris Lincourt (Beekmantown), Jayden Campagna (AuSable Valley), Noah Thayer (Saranac), Brennan Peters (Peru) and Emmett VanBuskirk (Saranac Lake) rounded out the top 10.
With their team performances, Beekmantown won the Class B sectional title. Saranac won Class C and Ticonderoga captured Class D.
Ti’s James DeFranco was his school’s highest finisher in 13th, followed by Noah Wells in 14th.
On the girls’ side, Boulds continued her strong season with a 17:44.96 time, 12 seconds ahead of second place Leila Fey of Lake Placid.
As was the case with the boys, no school clearly ran away with the sectional title as eight different teams were represented in the top 10.
Peru’s Maddy Welc came in third, followed by Nora Daley of Saranac Lake and Jordanne Minchoff of Beekmantown in fourth and fifth, respectively.
The Red Storm’s Asa Bruno came in sixth, followed by Julia Ryan of Saranac in seventh. Lake Placid’s Norah Francis finished eighth with Plattsburgh’s Abigail McLean coming in ninth and the Spartan’s Addalyn Coryer rounding out the top 10.
The future looks bright for the cross country world as only Boulds, Bruno and McLean are seniors.
Like their counterparts, the Beekmantown girls captured the Class B sectional title. Saranac held off Saranac Lake to claim Class C as Lake Placid won Class D.
Up next for the teams is the NYSPHSAA Cross Country Championships, which are set for Saturday at Queensbury High School.
