Texas A&M Women’s Basketball shows hunger, intensity in 6-1 start

The Texas A&M women’s basketball team is off to a strong start at 6-1 and is just one defensive stop away from being 7-0. After a difficult 2024-25 season, when they could barely field a starting five, coach Joni Taylor brought in veteran talent through the transfer portal.

Through seven games, the Aggies appear more prepared and hungrier. What they might lack in pure talent, they compensate for with intensity. Senior transfer Ny’Cerara Pryor provides stability at the point guard position and plays with a chip on her shoulder. She is adjusting well to the uptick in competition after coming from Sacred Heart, where she was twice named NEC Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, before adding a MAAC Defensive Player of the Year honor last season.

This feels like a make-or-break season for Coach Taylor, who entered her fourth year with an overall record of 38-52 and an 11-37 SEC mark, along with a first-round exit in the 2023-24 NCAA Tournament. Those numbers are not encouraging, but Taylor took the summer off from assisting USA teams and went all in on bringing in solid, team-first players while also making a few staff changes.

So far, the results are promising. They look like a team capable of giving SEC opponents trouble. There is still plenty of work to do, but the Aggies seem headed in the right direction. Do they look like an NCAA Tournament team right now? Not quite, but they are positioning themselves to be in the conversation when the time comes.
