Believe it or not, we’re this close to entering the third week of the Philadelphia Eagles‘ offensive coordinator search. This organization is home to an amazing owner and the NFL’s best and most aggressive general manager. They’re also loaded with stars on that side of the ball.
The Nick Sirianni coaching era enters its sixth year. We’ve seen enormous success and a mixed bag. He has led his team to the playoffs in each of his first five seasons. Each time, they have either been bounced in the Wild Card Round or qualified for the Super Bowl. These past four seasons, their offensive coordinator has either landed a head-coaching job or been fired.
There are no grey areas. Everything seems black and white. The question is simple. What the heck is going on? Ladies and gentlemen, we thank you for asking the question. Here are the top three roadblocks that seem to keep Philadelphia from landing its desired OC choice.
Personal safety–No one wants eggs thrown at their house
This one hasn’t been argued in the court of public opinion. This is more of a conversation being entertained on social media. Some say a new OC won’t want to deal with Jalen Hurts and perceived entitlement. Others say the fans are the culprit. The latter argument is typically followed by a statement.
If they can’t handle Philadelphia’s climate, they’d be a bad fit anyway. Still, it can be argued that no man wants eggs thrown at his house, especially if he has a family.
Sure, we laugh these things off, referencing a rabid and loyal fan base, but who’s to say the next vandal won’t take things a step further? It’s certainly something to think about.
Continuing locker-room drama -Why is there so much noise around this team?
Somewhere along the lines, it seemed the Eagles and Dallas Cowboys switched personalities. The former seemed to go about its business quietly, while Dallas displayed a Jekyll-and-Hyde personality.
On the one hand, Dallas wanted to be known as ‘America’s Team,’ but they also wanted to be seen as renegades. Come on! Pick a side! You can’t wear both a white and a black cowboy hat.
Certainly, Jerry Jones is the wildcard in that debate. Jeffrey Lurie has been silent publicly, while Jones has never met a microphone he didn’t love. Still, lately, especially during the Nick Sirianni era, the Eagles have been a drama-filled organization.
Is it possible that all of the noise surrounding A.J. Brown and Jalen Hurts is scaring people off? Maybe it isn’t, but it isn’t unfair to ask these questions.
Job security – What if Nick Sirianni is fired after this season?
This might be the biggest issue, even though it’s plausible that Mike McDaniel landed on the West Coast because he wanted to be in a warm-weather city. His wife is also from Carolina. Hey, we’re just throwing out other ideas.
Still, Nick Sirianni’s leash seems thin. It has been reported that Jeffrey Lurie entertained the idea of moving on after a 2-2 start in 2024, and it’s hard to woo offensive coordinator candidates when they might be on the hunt for a job again next offseason.
Think about Brian Daboll, seeing as how he has been a hot to[ic. After being fired during the most recent regular season, maybe it seemed attractive to join the Tennessee Titans, where there’s less of an expectation to win immediately.
