Commanders land Ohio State star in Daniel Jeremiah's 2.0 mock draft

I’ve been avoiding the mock drafts; I haven’t even been reading them.

But with the NFL Scouting Combine coming next week and the real NFL season and games completed, I finally gave in and checked my first mock draft of the offseason. Not all mock drafts are equal, and one of the more respected men in the business of covering the NFL is Daniel Jeremiah. He released his second (I never even saw the first) mock draft on Tuesday, so let’s see what he has for the Commanders at No. 7.

7. Washington Commanders Arvell Reese, LB/ Edge, Ohio State

Reese provides Washington some explosiveness and versatility. He might be a tougher projection than some of the other pass rushers in this year’s draft, given that he split time between edge rusher and off-ball linebacker for the Buckeyes. Reese has the highest upside of the group, though.

So it reads as Jeremiah thinks that, in the end, Reese might fall to the Commanders because teams might see him as a tweener, a player without certainty about their projected position in the NFL. Reese is at 6-feet-4, 243 pounds. That would be rather small for a defensive end, unless he is explosive enough to cause all sorts of trouble on his speed rushes. If the Commanders are able to sign a defensive end or two in free agency, then this pick could be where they want to go, that is, if Reese is still available at seven. Reese has played off-ball linebacker and edge rusher at Ohio State, so he is versatile.

It would be great if GM Adam Peters could fill some needs with signing perhaps four new defensive starters. Then he could simply draft at No. 7 the player he feels is the most impactful player remaining on his board.

Here is Daniel Jeremiah’s Top 10 in his second mock draft:

  • 1. Raiders: Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza
  • 2. Jets: Texas Tech EDGE David Bailey
  • 3. Cardinals: Miami OT Francis Mauigoa
  • 4. Titans: Miami EDGE Rueben Bain Jr.
  • 5. Giants: Ohio State WR Carnell Tate
  • 6. Browns: Utah OT Spencer Fano
  • 7. Commanders: Ohio State LB/EDGE Arvell Reese
  • 8. Saints: USC WR Makai Lemon
  • 9. Chiefs: Notre Dame RB Jeremiyah Love
  • 10. Bengals: Ohio State S Caleb Downs
