Jon Rahm has long been one of the top names in golf, but right now, he finds himself in a complicated situation involving the DP World Tour.

When Rahm made the move to LIV Golf in 2023, he likely expected that a merger with the PGA Tour and DP World Tour would be just around the corner.

But things have not played out that way. Now, his involvement with LIV Golf is creating a potential headache for Team Europe ahead of the Ryder Cup.

He was a key player again for Luke Donald’s European team at Bethpage Black last year and had already made his mark at Marco Simone back in 2023.

Even among players outside LIV, Rahm remains well-liked and, when he is playing well, there are few better golfers anywhere in the world.

Could the 31-year-old be left out of the Ryder Cup team entirely when the event takes place at Adare Manor in Ireland next year?

On Saturday, the DP World Tour confirmed that eight LIV Golf players had been granted releases to play certain events on the Saudi-backed circuit.

This allows them to take part in specific LIV tournaments even when they clash with DP World Tour events.

In return, they will also be required to participate in a set number of DP World Tour tournaments, making for a busy schedule in 2026.

The eight players given approval are Tyrrell Hatton, Laurie Canter, Thomas Detry, Tom McKibbin, Adrian Meronk, Victor Perez, David Puig and Elvis Smylie.

To be eligible for this arrangement, the players had to settle any outstanding fines, commit to a certain number of appearances – along with media duties and promotional activities – and drop all ongoing appeals against previous sanctions.

But what caught many by surprise was that Rahm was not among those named.

The likely reason is that the Spaniard has not settled his fines yet.

This situation could prove quite problematic for Rahm as he looks ahead to the 2027 Ryder Cup.

Jon Rahm’s status for 2027 Ryder Cup comes into question after DP World Tour announcement

Sky Sports analyst Rich Beem weighed in on Saturday, offering his perspective on the situation.

“Well, the DP World Tour did not want to speculate, so I guess they’re gonna leave it up to me to speculate,” he began by saying.

“I would like to think that, you know, it has to do something with the paying of fines.

“Maybe Jon Rahm doesn’t believe he has to pay the fines, or doesn’t like the fact that they’re going to dictate the schedule to him.

“I think that’s also, again, I think that’s a big sticking point for a lot of these players is that they’re being told where they have to go, what they have to do in order to satisfy all the rules and regulations set forth by the DP World Tour.

“I think that would be a big sticking point for a lot of the guys.

“Now, as far as it comes to the Ryder Cup, I think it could pose a problem, but we have to keep in mind, though, this is just a one year deal, this one.

“It pertains to the calendar year 2026 and has no bearing going to 2027 as of yet.

“So this is just a one year, one time deal. Remains to be seen exactly if that’s going to change in 2027 or what it’s going to look like in 2027.

“But right now it’s just for 2026 so as far as Jon Rahm and the Ryder Cup, that’s not going to quite play into anybody’s hands as of yet.”

It is highly probable that the DP World Tour will reach an agreement with Rahm before the 2027 Ryder Cup at Adare Manor. To do otherwise would be an act of self-sabotage.
