First baseman/third baseman Mark Vientos may have limited opportunities with the New York Mets during the 2026 season.
Just two seasons ago, Vientos hit 27 home runs and recorded a .837 OPS, a career high. Last year’s results at the plate were not nearly as solid, however, as he connected for just 17 homers and a .702 OPS in 10 more appearances than the previous season.
Funny enough, Vientos’ strikeout percentage dropped nearly five points, going from 29.7 to 24.8. New York plans to use free agent signees Jorge Polanco at first and Bo Bichette at third.
Former top prospect Brett Baty is also in the mix at the hot corner. Will this lead to a change of scenery for Vientos?
Mets could trade Vientos to a contender
With Polanco and Bichette added to the Mets’ heart of the order, Vientos may have a better opportunity at playing time with another club.
“Speaking of best arguments against trades, the Mets may yet have a need for Vientos. He’s primarily a third baseman and first baseman, and they have two starters (Bo Bichette and Jorge Polanco) who are new to those positions,” Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer wrote Tuesday.
“For now, though, Vientos seems sidelined in a way that fellow former top prospect Brett Baty does not. There’s no harm in seeing what’s out there for him, especially if someone is willing to give up pitching.”
Baty had a career-high 3.1 bWAR and 18 home runs last season and can handle a full-time role at second base if Marcus Semien suffers an injury.
