Cincinnati hiring Jerrod Calhoun from Utah State as men's basketball coach, per reports

Ten days after firing Wes Miller, Cincinnati has reportedly hired a new men’s basketball coach.

Jerrod Calhoun, who coached Utah State to two consecutive NCAA tournament berths, will take over the Bearcats program, according to multiple reports. The school has not yet officially announced the hiring, but is expected to this week.

This season, the Aggies finished 29-7, winning the Mountain West regular-season and conference tournament championships. As a No. 9 seed in the NCAA tournament, Utah State defeated Villanova, 86-76, in the first round before losing to No. 1 Arizona on Sunday, 78-66.

During his two seasons in Logan, Calhoun compiled a 55-15 record. Prior to his Utah State stint, Calhoun coached Youngstown State for seven seasons, collecting a 118-106 record and one regular-season Horizon League title.

Utah State has lost four consecutive coaches after three seasons or fewer and an NCAA tournament appearance. Craig Smith went to Utah, Ryan Odom (now Virginia’s head coach) took the job at VCU and Danny Sprinkle left for Washington prior to Calhoun’s exit.

A Cincinnati alumnus and Ohio native, Calhoun began his coaching career as a student assistant under Bob Huggins in 2004. He later worked as an assistant on Huggins’ staff at West Virginia for five seasons.

Calhoun was Cincinnati’s top target once Wes Miller was dismissed on March 13 after five seasons with no NCAA tournament bids. His representatives quickly worked out an agreement to take the Bearcats’ job after Utah State’s season was finished, CBS Sports reported.

Miller finished with a 100-74 record, while coaching the Bearcats through a transition from the American Conference to the Big 12. Cincinnati finished 18-15 this season and 9-9 in the Big 12. The Bearcats defeated Utah in the first round of the conference tournament before falling to UCF, 66-65.

Earlier on Monday, Miller was hired as the new head coach at Charlotte.
