The Toronto Blue Jays are off to some major struggles this season, and a huge reason has been the injury bug, which has knocked out a lot of the team’s starters this year.
At 12-15, the Blue Jays have been playing better lately, but the team is still down a lot of key starters, especially in the rotation. And things are only getting worse.
As the Blue Jays announced on Monday, Max Scherzer, the beloved future Hall of Famer, was placed on the injured list and will be replaced by righty Chase Lee.
Blue Jays place Max Scherzer on IL
“ROSTER MOVES: RHP Max Scherzer placed on 15-day IL (right forearm tendinitis, left ankle inflammation). RHP Chase Lee recalled from Triple-A and will be active tonight,” the Blue Jays announced Monday.
This is some very tough news for the Blue Jays, as that now makes the team’s sixth starting pitcher to land on the injured list this season, joining Cody Ponce, Trey Yesavage, Shane Bieber, Jose Berrios, and Bowden Francis.

Scherzer had a 9.64 ERA on the season with 10 strikeouts, just one away from 3,500 in his MLB career. He had a 1-3 record and was struggling a lot this season. He now lands on the IL and will miss some time.
Meanwhile, the Blue Jays are recalling Lee, a 27-year-old right-handed pitcher who, in his 32-game big-league career, has posted a 4.10 ERA across 37.1 innings of work.
Toronto’s only healthy starters are now Kevin Gausman, Dylan Cease, and Patrick Cobin. They will have to get very creative with their rotation and bullpen usage going forward, as the team is in desperate need of more pitching once again this season.
